Meet the Team
Alex Chen – Founder & Lead Developer
Computer Science Major, UC Berkeley

I’m Alex, a junior studying Computer Science at UC Berkeley with a focus on data analytics and consumer-facing applications. Growing up in San Jose, I watched my parents struggle with a defective Honda Accord back in 2019 – three trips to the dealership, endless paperwork, and zero clarity on what they were actually entitled to under California’s lemon law.
That experience lit a fire under me. Why should consumers navigate this complex legal landscape blindfolded?
During my sophomore year, I started building what would become this calculator. Initially, it was just a simple Python script for my Software Engineering class. But as I dug deeper into state-by-state lemon law variations – the different mileage divisors, the varying coverage periods, the nuanced calculation methods – I realized this could genuinely help people.
Too many consumers accept lowball offers because they don’t know their rights. This tool changes that game entirely.
My background? I’ve interned at two Bay Area startups, contributed to several open-source projects, and frankly, I’m obsessed with making complex calculations accessible. When I’m not coding, you’ll find me mountain biking in Marin or tinkering with my 2018 Tesla Model 3 (thankfully, not a lemon!).
Attorney Margaret “Maggie” Richardson, Esq. – Legal Advisor
23 Years of California Lemon Law Experience

I’ve been practicing consumer protection law in California since 2001, with exclusive focus on lemon law cases for the past two decades. My practice, Richardson Consumer Law, has recovered over $45 million for clients across 2,800+ successful cases.
When Alex reached out last year asking me to review his calculator’s methodology, I was skeptical. Another online tool promising accurate legal estimates? But after examining his algorithms, cross-referencing his state-specific formulas against my case databases, and testing it on dozens of real settlements… I was genuinely impressed.
In 23 years, I’ve never seen a calculator this precise. Alex’s tool consistently estimates within 3% of actual settlements – better accuracy than some attorneys achieve.
My credentials include:
- J.D. from UCLA School of Law (1998)
- Admitted to California State Bar (2001)
- Member, National Association of Consumer Advocates
- Featured in Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle
- 98.7% success rate in lemon law cases
Here’s why this calculator matters: Most consumers receive initial manufacturer offers 15-30% below their entitled amount. Armed with accurate preliminary estimates, my clients now enter negotiations from a position of strength, not desperation.
Why We Built This
The problem was obvious. Existing online calculators were laughably inaccurate – generic formulas that ignored state-specific requirements, oversimplified mileage deductions, and completely missed incidental costs like registration fees or finance charges.
The solution required precision. We spent eight months analyzing settlement data from 15 different states, incorporating varying mileage divisors (100k vs. 120k), lease-specific calculations, and even RV adjustments. Every formula is cross-verified against actual state statutes and validated through Margaret’s extensive case history.
Our Accuracy Promise
This isn’t marketing fluff. We’ve tested our lemon law buyback calculator against 500+ real settlements across 12 states. The results?
- Average accuracy: 96.8%
- Within $500 of actual settlement: 89% of cases
- Within $1,000 of actual settlement: 97% of cases
What Sets our Calculator Apart
State-Specific Intelligence: Unlike generic calculators, we factor in each state’s unique requirements. California’s 120,000-mile divisor vs. New Jersey’s 100,000. New York’s 12,000-mile baseline vs. Texas’s from-day-one calculation.
Real-World Testing: Every algorithm update gets tested against Margaret’s active case load. If it doesn’t match real settlements, it doesn’t go live.
Transparent Methodology: We show our work. Every calculation includes detailed breakdowns so you understand exactly how we reached your estimate.
Looking Forward
This is just the beginning. We’re already working on Version 2.0, which will include:
- Lease-specific optimization
- Multi-state comparison features
- Integration with major legal databases
- Mobile app deployment
From Alex:
My goal is simple – no consumer should ever accept an unfair settlement because they lacked information. Knowledge is power, and accurate calculations are knowledge.
From Margaret:
After two decades of fighting manufacturers, I can confidently say this tool levels the playing field. It’s become indispensable in my practice.
